Classification of inverters

Inverters, as key equipment for converting direct current into alternating current, come in a wide variety of types. According to different classification criteria, they can be divided into multiple types to meet diverse application requirements.

According to the nature of the power supply, they are mainly divided into power frequency inverters and high-frequency inverters. Power frequency inverters use transformers to achieve electrical isolation. They have a sturdy structure and strong overload capacity, but they are relatively large in size and weight, and have slightly lower efficiency. They are often used in industrial fields. High-frequency inverters achieve conversion through high-frequency switching technology. They are compact in size and highly efficient, making them the mainstream choice for modern household and portable devices.

According to the output waveform, they can be classified into square wave inverters, modified wave inverters and sine wave inverters. Square wave inverters have a simple structure and low cost, but their waveform quality is poor and they can only drive resistive loads. The compatibility of the modified wave inverter has been improved, making it an economical and practical compromise solution. The output waveform of a pure sine wave inverter is exactly the same as that of the mains power supply. It can drive all types of AC loads, including precision equipment that is sensitive to power quality. It is currently the type with the best performance and the widest application.

According to the application scenarios, there are grid-connected inverters and off-grid inverters. Grid-connected inverters feed the electricity generated by renewable energy into the public power grid and need to have grid connection protection functions. Off-grid inverters are used in independent systems, such as field power supply or emergency power sources, and are not connected to the power grid.

In addition, there are micro-inverters for special needs, which are usually matched with a single solar panel to achieve independent maximum power point tracking and improve the overall power generation efficiency of the system.

The classification of inverters reflects the refined development of power electronics technology for different scenarios. Understanding its classification helps us make the most suitable choice based on specific needs - whether it is driving household appliances, building off-grid systems or constructing photovoltaic power stations - to utilize electricity efficiently and safely.
