The core advantage of lithium iron phosphate stems from its stable crystal structure. Its cathode material adopts an olivine structure. The P-O covalent bond in this structure has an extremely high bond energy. Even under extreme conditions such as high temperature or overcharging, it is difficult for oxygen to be released. Thus, it fundamentally avoids the risk of severe thermal runaway and combustion explosion, laying an unparalleled safety foundation. In contrast, many other lithium-ion battery material systems are hard to match it in terms of safety and stability.

In addition to safety, the battery life performance of this system is also outstanding. The equally stable crystal structure makes the repeated intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ions have little impact on the positive electrode skeleton, so the battery can withstand more than 3,500 complete charge and discharge cycles or even more with a slow capacity decline. This means that electric vehicles powered by it may have a longer overall service life and significantly reduce the long-term usage cost for users.

However, any technology has trade-offs. The "Achilles' heel" oflithium iron phosphate batteries lies in their relatively low energy density. Its voltage platform (about 3.2V) and theoretical specific capacity are both lower than those of mainstream ternary lithium batteries, resulting in less electrical energy being stored in the same volume or weight. To some extent, this limits its penetration in the high-end passenger car sector that pursues ultimate driving range.
