Flooded lead-acid batteries: A reliable choice for traditional energy storage technologies

As the mainstream category of lead-acid batteries, flooded lead-acid batteries have occupied an important position in the energy storage field since their introduction in the 19th century, thanks to their mature technical path and stable performance. Its core structure is composed of lead plates, sulfuric acid electrolyte, separators and a plastic casing. The mutual conversion of electrical energy and chemical energy is achieved through the chemical reaction between the plates and the electrolyte. This battery is designed with a liquid electrolyte, with the sulfuric acid concentration typically maintained at 1.28g/cm³. The plates are fully immersed in the electrolyte, ensuring the ion conduction efficiency. The theoretical cycle life can reach 300 to 500 times. In practical applications, the service life can be further extended through regular maintenance.


In terms of technical features, flooded lead-acid batteries demonstrate significant advantages. Its prominent feature is low cost. The raw materials lead and sulfuric acid are easily accessible. The production process is mature, and the manufacturing cost is only 1/3 to 1/2 of that of lithium-ion batteries. It also features excellent high-current discharge capability, with an instantaneous discharge current reaching 3 to 5 times the rated capacity, making it suitable for scenarios such as start-up and emergency power supply. In addition, the battery supports full recovery after deep discharge. Even when the discharge depth reaches 80%, it can still be restored to over 95% of its rated capacity through charging. Moreover, it has outstanding high-temperature resistance and can operate stably in an environment ranging from -20℃ to 60℃.


The application fields of flooded lead-acid batteries cover multiple industrial and civilian scenarios. In the field of transportation, it is widely used as the starting power source for automobiles and motorcycles. More than 80% of fuel vehicles worldwide are equipped with liquid-rich starting batteries. In the communication industry, it is used as a backup power source for base stations, with a single-unit capacity typically ranging from 500 to 2000Ah. In the field of new energy, small-scale photovoltaic off-grid systems mostly adopt 12V/24V series battery energy storage. In the field of low-speed electric vehicles such as forklifts and golf carts, it also holds approximately 60% of the market share. Despite the competition from lithium-ion batteries, flooded lead-acid batteries still have an irreplaceable cost-performance advantage in cost-sensitive scenarios where maintenance conditions permit.
