Voltage Classification and Application Analysis of Lead-Acid Batteries

As a mature chemical power source, the voltage level classification of lead-acid batteries is closely related to the application scenarios. Currently, a complete product system covering low voltage to high voltage has been formed. According to the voltage characteristics of individual cells, lead-acid batteries can be classified into basic voltage levels such as 2V, 6V, and 12V. By combining them in series, they can form higher voltage systems and are widely used in multiple fields including transportation, energy, and communication.

The 2V single cell battery is the basic unit of lead-acid batteries, featuring large capacity and long cycle life. It is mainly used in energy storage systems and large uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). In photovoltaic energy storage power stations, hundreds or even thousands of 2V batteries are connected in series and parallel to form battery packs with a voltage of 48V or higher, which can stably store renewable energy electricity. The backup power supply for communication base stations also mostly adopts 2V large-capacity batteries to ensure the continuous operation of equipment when the power grid is interrupted.

6V lead-acid batteries are commonly found in small power equipment and emergency power sources. Their typical applications include electric wheelchairs, children's electric vehicles and portable lighting devices. This type of battery typically adopts a series connection structure of three 2V cells, balancing voltage output and structural compactness. In golf carts and other course vehicles, multiple 6V battery groups connected in series can provide 36V or 48V power supply, meeting the requirements of low-speed and long-range driving.

The 12V lead-acid batteries is currently the most widely used voltage specification. It is composed of six sealed 2V cells and is commonly used in car starting power supplies, motorcycle batteries and household backup power supplies. The car starting battery needs to provide a large current instantly, and a 12V system can meet the requirements of the starting motor. In the RV power supply system, multiple 12V batteries can be connected in parallel to build an off-grid power supply system, supporting the operation of devices such as refrigerators and lighting.

The high-voltage lead-acid batteries system is achieved through the series connection of multiple cells. For instance, a 48V power battery pack is used for electric forklifts, and a 96V system is applied as a backup power source in communication machine rooms. Despite competition from lithium batteries, lead-acid batteries still hold an important position in fields such as low-speed electric vehicles and energy storage base stations, thanks to their advantages of low cost, high safety, and a well-developed recycling system. Their diverse voltage characteristics continue to support the demands of both traditional and emerging application scenarios.
