Application Analysis of Lead-Acid Batteries with Different Capacities in the Field of Energy Storage

Lead-acid batteries, as a mature electrochemical energy storage technology, exhibit differentiated application values in energy storage scenarios with their various capacity specifications. Small-capacity lead-acid batteries (typically referring to 12V/20Ah and below) are widely used in off-grid low-power energy storage scenarios due to their low cost and easy maintenance. For instance, in a rural household solar lighting system, a 12V/17Ah battery can be matched with a 50W photovoltaic panel to achieve an average daily power storage of 0.3kWh, meeting the needs of basic lighting and mobile phone charging. In the field of backup power supply for communication base stations, 2V/100Ah single batteries, when connected in series to form a 48V system, can provide emergency power supply for base station equipment for 2 to 4 hours, ensuring the continuity of signal transmission.

Medium-capacity lead-acid batteries (20-200Ah) demonstrate unique advantages in microgrid energy storage. Taking a 500Ah/2V single battery as an example, by combining 24 series to form a 48V/500Ah energy storage unit, it can be adapted to a 3-5kW small-scale wind-solar hybrid system, achieving an average daily energy management of 15-20kWh in off-grid villages or border guard posts. This type of battery can have a cycle life of over 800 times within the range of 60% to 70% charge and discharge depth, balancing economy and reliability. It is particularly suitable for scenarios where cost is sensitive and the power load is stable.

Large-capacity lead-acid batteries (above 200Ah) have a place in the field of large-scale energy storage. The 2V/1000Ah tubular plate battery, composed of hundreds of cells connected in series, forms an MWh-level energy storage system, playing a peak shaving role in the scenario of renewable energy consumption. The 2MWh lead-acid energy storage system equipped with a 5MW photovoltaic power station, which adopts a 2V/1500Ah battery pack, can reduce the daytime curtailment rate from 18% to below 5%, and lower the cost per kilowatt-hour by 0.12 yuan by smoothing out power fluctuations. Although the energy density is only 30-40Wh/kg, the total cost of ownership (TCO) of this type of battery over a 10-year service life is 25%-30% lower than that of lithium batteries, making it still competitive in static energy storage scenarios.

Lead-acid batteries of different capacities meet diverse energy storage demands through differentiated technical paths: small-capacity products focus on portable emergency response, medium-capacity ones emphasize off-grid micro-storage, and large-capacity ones serve large-scale peak shaving. With the improvement of technologies such as colloidal electrolyte and carbon modification, lead-acid batteries have continuously enhanced their cycle life (some products have exceeded 2,000 times) and low-temperature performance (capacity retention rate at -20℃ exceeds 70%), and will still play an irreplaceable role in specific energy storage fields in the future.
