The lead-acid starting battery of a car is the core of the vehicle's electrical system. Its main task is to provide the starter with an instantaneous and powerful current (usually up to several hundred amperes) to ignite the engine. Once the engine starts, it switches to standby mode, where the generator charges it and supplies power to on-board electrical appliances such as lights and audio systems.
Its interior is mainly composed of a positive plate (lead dioxide), a negative plate (spongy lead), a separator and an electrolyte (dilute sulfuric acid). During charging, the process proceeds in reverse, and electrical energy is converted into chemical energy for storage.

Frequent deep discharges will greatly damage its lifespan.
Modern passenger cars generally use "maintenance-free" lead-acid batteries, whose electrolyte is sealed and cannot be added. Their service life is usually 2 to 4 years, depending on driving habits, ambient temperature and the number of charge and discharge cycles. When phenomena such as weak starting power and significantly dimming headlights at idle speed occur, it often indicates that the battery needs to be inspected or replaced.
